Violinista, polistrumentista, direttore d’orchestra statunitense (Memphis, Tennessee, 19.12.1895 – Chicago, Illinois, 17.12.1978). Studia musica al Lane College di Jackson (Tennessee) e all’American Conservatory di Chicago. Esordisce a Chicago nel 1912 e suona all’inaugurazione del Vendome Theatre nel 1919 con la sua orchestra. L’Esrkine Tate’s Vendome Symphony Orchestra, formazione di nove musicisti che ne comprenderà quindici negli anni ’20. Si esibisce al Vendome fino al 1928, in seguito si trasferisce al Metropolitan Theatre per due anni e poi al Michigan Theatre fino al 1932, per proseguire quindi la sua attività di direttore d’orchestra a Chicago inao la 1945, anno in cui diviene professore di musica. Erskine Tate ha utilizzato numerosi jazzmen nei suoi concerti, i cui repertori andavano dall’hot jazz a brani di musica sinfonica.
