Contrabbassista statunitense (Saint James Parish, Louisiana, 25.1.1891 – Los Angeles, California, 29.10.1966).

American double bass player (Saint James Parish, Louisiana, 25.1.1891 - Los Angeles, California, 29.10.1966). He learned to play the violin at an early age before adopting the double bass he plays, especially in the orchestra of a famous New Orleans club: Tom Anderson's Cabaret.

He arrived in Chicago in 1917, made various tours before joining the Charlie Elgar orchestra in 1922. After a short stay in London in 1923, he was hired by Wilbur Sweatman, then in orchestras accompanying shows (1926-27) before being included in the Duke Ellington orchestra (1927-35), participating in the 1933 European tour. Joins Jimmie Noone then plays in Kaiser Marshall's orchestra before becoming one of the Spirits Of Rhythm. In 1937 he formed his trio that performed in other formations: Hot Lips Page (1938), Edgard Hayes (1939), Sidney Bechet (1940-41), Al Sears (1943), Garvin Bushell (1944).

Engaged in extramusical activities, he appears only sporadically until 1956. He resumes full-time activities with Kid Ory, who takes him to Europe for a tour. Settling in California, he plays in the company of Joe Darensbourg (1960). Victim of heart disease in 1961, he had to slow down his activity.

Along with Pops Foster, Wellman Braud is the most representative double bass player of the New Orleans style. The powerful yet flexible base, the execution, and the great sobriety that energetically emphasizes the four beats of the bar are a stimulating example for the musicians he accompanies in small groups and the great Duke Ellington orchestra. His slapping was particularly spectacular.
