American trombone and banjo player, singer, and conductor (Mount Healthy, Ohio, 10.5.1907 - Plymouth, Maryland, 22.6.1979).

Coming from a family of musicians, after studying at Ohio State University, he began playing the banjo at the age of seventeen. Graduated from the Cincinnati Conservatory, he performed with local orchestras (banjo and trombone) before reaching Jean Goldkette's formation in Kansas City in late 1927-early 1928.

After working in Detroit in 1929, he became one of the founding members of the Casa Loma Band, directed by Glen Gray and performing as a singer. In May 1943, he left Gray and became a disc jockey in Hollywood, acted as a soloist, and in early 1945 joined the merchant navy. In 1946 Pee Wee Hunt created a small formation which he leads for a long time.

A thundering, parody version of Twelfth Street Rag recorded in 1946 makes him famous; Hunt is content to exploit the vein to the end. Nothing in his previous career seemed to lead him to follow that path. His chorus in the Casa Loma Orchestra highlighted an expressive, dynamic, but disciplined musician animated by a spirit of seriousness.
