The beat literary movement invests Greenwich Village, which welcomes both boppers and free musicians at Café Bohemia, Village Gate, Five Spot, Village Vanguard (open since 1936), and Half Note. While Dixieland lovers find themselves by Eddie Condon, Nick's (1936-1963), Jimmy Ryan's and at Café Society Downtown (its owner, Barney Josephson - also responsible for the jazz restaurant The Cookery - opened another Café Society in Harlem).

At the time of the paroxysm of free jazz, at the end of the 1960s, clubs opened in areas of the Village and the Lower East Side (Slug's). Heralding the fashion of the lofts and, on the Bowery, of the Tin Palace. In Harlem, this period's musical activity will continue for a while at the Celebrity Club, at Small's Paradise (open since 1925), at the Basie's Lounge, at Minton's and, sometimes, mixing jazz and pop music, at the Apollo theater.

In the early 1980s, Sweet Basil, the Blue Note, and various bars and restaurants with pianists sprang up around the historic Village Vanguard, including Bradley's, the most prestigious and musically exciting one. The large concert halls (Carnegie Hall, Town Hall, Lincoln Center, and Radio Music Hall) and Central Park have been regularly hosting jazz music, especially since the Newport Jazz Festival takes place every summer in New York.
