Contrabbassista statunitense (Antonito, California, 2.2.1920 – San Juan Pueblo, New Mexico, 7.1987).

American double bass player (Antonito, California, 2.2.1920 - San Juan Pueblo, New Mexico, 7.1987). He comes from a family of Indian descent. After learning to play the bass himself, he made his professional debut in some dance orchestras around Los Angeles.

In 1946 Woody Herman hired him for a short period: the orchestra was dissolved at the end of the year, Joe Mondragon took a job in commercial ensembles. He reappears in the early 1950s, with the arrival in California of Gerry Mulligan, Shorty Rogers, Shelly Manne, etc., who hire him. He becomes one of the West Coast's most in-demand bass players, later turning to studio work, to which he will remain faithful for a long time.

Beautiful grave sonority, unerring sense of time, the beauty of the melodic line: these qualities amply explain the reason for his numerous participation in recording sessions in the 1950s. With Red Mitchell, he was one of those who helped change the role of bass in jazz.
