Cornettista e direttore d’orchestra statunitense (Chicago, Illinois, 15.3.1907 – Port Washington, New York, 13.3.1991).

Ritorna negli Stati Uniti nel 1946; nel 1953 prende parte a varie trasmissioni televisive (The Magic Horn Show).

American cornetist and conductor (Chicago, Illinois, 15.3.1907 - Port Washington, New York, 13.3.1991). Son of a music teacher and brother of guitarist Dick McPartland, he learned to play the violin and at thirteen the cornet at five.

He was one of the Chicagoans band (young white musicians who first tried to put themselves on the same level as the black jazz school of New Orleans and form mixed orchestras). Since the early 1920s, he became a member of the Austin High School Gang, with Bud Freeman, Frank Teschemacher, Floyd O'Brien, and Dave Tough.

At the end of 1924, he replaces Bix Beiderbecke in the Wolverines. After performing with Jean Goldkette and Art Kassel, he plays with Ben Pollack from 1927 to 1929. During the crisis, he plays on the radio in the sweet formations. But in 1937, he forms a group with which he remains until the call to arms in 1942. Participates in the campaign in Europe, during which he met his future wife, the British pianist Marian Turner, in Belgium. He returned to the United States in 1946; in 1953, he took part in various television broadcasts (The Magic Horn Show).

After several years of inactivity, starting from 1972, he returns to play by participating in a series of concerts in South Africa. He plays in Newport in 1978 and Nice in 1974 and 1985; he has long been married to the English pianist, who retained her married surname Marian McPartland.

Jimmy McPartland, like all Chicagoans, discovered jazz in the 1920s by listening to black musicians in Chicago's southern neighborhood. He also became passionate about the records of the New Orleans Rhythm Kings (1922-23). He also admires Bix Beiderbecke. The melodic nuances of his cornet performance are a moving testimony to this.
