Batterista e caporchestra statunitense (Birmingham, Alabama, 17.2.1907 – New York, 25.1.1987).

American drummer and conductor (Birmingham, Alabama, 17.2.1907 - New York, 25.1.1987).

In St Louis, where his parents moved, he began playing the trombone in 1919. But his young age (and his arms still too short of using the drawstring) pushed him towards the drums, to which he made his debut in 1921. The following year he already directed his group, then he was hired by Fate Marable and Dewey Jackson to play on a river barge.

He then plays with Jimmy Powell (1927-28) before moving to Chicago and joining the lines of Clifford King and Jerome Pasquall. For the Vocalion, in 1930, he recorded six songs, while in 1933, he joined the Louis Armstrong Orchestra. Then, in New York, he plays at Small's Paradise with Emperor Jones and the Cotton Club with Wendell P. Talbert (Talbot), Sam Wooding, and Ferman Tapps.

Hired by Fats Waller (1934-35), he participates in numerous sessions of the pianist, who will leave to work with Ed Allen (1937-40) and take on the leadership of a group engaged at Small's from 1948 to 1955. Later he is part of the trio of the clarinetist Lester Boone then abandoning the musical activity.

Primarily, drummer of Waller's small group, Dial brought stability and a reassuring and calm swing to the rhythm section, even if lacking great imagination.
