Trombettista statunitense (Macon, Georgia, 23.7.1915 – 22.6.1993).

American trumpet player (Macon, Georgia, 23.7.1915 - 22.6.1993).

He spent his childhood in Cleveland, where he played in local orchestras before Frank Terry's in New York in 1933. Fletcher Henderson hired him to replace Roy Eldridge in 1936. He remained in the orchestra until his dissolution (1939).

He is hired by Horace Henderson (1940), Earl Hines, Teddy Wilson (1941-42), Raymon Scott (1942), Lionel Hampton, Don Redman, Benny Carter (1943), John Kirby (1944-45), Eddie Heywood (1945 ), before joining Count Basie (1945-50). He is then found with Jimmy Rushing (1951), in the small formation that Johnny Hodges constitutes after leaving Ellington (1951-54), with Earl Hines, in the great Cootie Williams orchestra (1955), who goes for a tour in Europe with Sammy Price's Bluesicians (December 1955 - May 1956).

After playing with Illinois Jacquet, he returned to Europe with Buck Clayton in 1959 and 1961, within the Newport Jazz Festival. He settled in California for three years and returned to New York in 1965, for short periods in various orchestras: Peanuts Hucko (1966), Wilbur DeParis (1967). In the late 1960s, he settled in Canada, where he produced with Big Chief Russell Moore (1968), Buddy Tate (1969), before returning to Cleveland (1970) and abandoning all musical activity a little at a time.

First section trumpeter, he is also an exciting soloist. Under the combined influences of Louis Armstrong and Roy Eldridge, an all-powerful style has been forged that excludes neither agility nor sensitivity. It is favored by a delightful full sound when using the muted.
