Trombonista statunitense (New Orleans, Louisiana, 22.5.1891 – New York, 9.4.1963).

American trombonist (New Orleans, Louisiana, 22.5.1891 - New York, 9.4.1963).

He made his debut as a violinist (1910); he regularly plays the trombone since 1912 in the formations of Pope Laine, then in that of Ernest Giardina (1914-16). In the spring of 1916, he performed in Chicago in the orchestra of the New Orleans drummer Johnny Hountha (aka Stein). At the latter's departure, Edwards and the group's cornet player, Nick LaRocca, replaced him with Tony Sbarbaro and found the Original Dixieland Jass Band. Hired at the end of 1916 at the Reisenweber's Restaurant in New York, the orchestra achieved great success and recorded the first known "jass" records (February 1917, one of the first pieces has the title Dixie Jass Band One-Step).

Called in the army (1918-19), he could not participate in the orchestra's tour of England, which he found in 1920 until his dissolution in 1925. During the second half of the 1920s, Edwards played in several prominent New York ensembles and his bands. The crisis forced him to abandon music, to which he returned in 1936 when the ODJB was reformed. Edwards performs with his various components until 1940, then plays sporadically in New York before being hired in the troupe of the dancer Katherine Dunham. He will continue to play occasionally until his death.

Early trombonist Eddie Edwards is not a soloist. But his role in ODJB is no less critical and makes him the group factotum, in which he ensures the continuity of the baseline.
