Club Newyorkese, situato in un sottoscala, nel cuore del Greenwich Village – 178, 7a Avenue, vicino all’11a Strada – aperto nel 1935 da Max Gordon (nato nel 1902 in una famiglia originaria della Lituania). All’inizio era frequentato da cantanti, poeti e bluesmen (che succedono a Leadbelly, ingaggiato nel 1941 su raccomandazione del cineasta Nicholas Ray), poi a poco a poco vi si esibiscono solo musicisti jazz – Art Tatum, Erroll Garner, Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, il Modern Jazz Quartet, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Albert Ayler, Dexter Gordon, Herbie Hancock, ma anche molte big band che si ammassano su una minuscola pedana. A partire dal 1966 ogni lunedì il Vanguard presenta la Vanguard Jazz Orchestra (nata come Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Big Band, poi diventata la Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra dopo la partenza e la morte del trombettista), e il resto della settimana i gruppi dei migliori jazzisti moderni. Al contrario degli altri storici jazz club di Manhattan (Half Note, Five Spot, Birdland, Slug’s, Jimmy Ryan’s), il locale che fu di Max Gordon resta ancora in attività.
