Clarinettista, altosassofonista, direttore d’orchestra e compositore statunitense di origine italiana (Toluca, Illinois, 22.12.1901 – Chicago, Illinois, 11.7.1949). Figlio di un clarinettista, suona, dalla più tenera età, in un’orchestra militare. Verso il 1923 incontra a Chicago il pianista Elmer Schoebel che lo indirizza verso il jazz. Il pianista Arnold Johnson e il violinista Ben Bernie l’ingaggiano (1924-26). Diventa membro della formazione di Jean Goldkette (1926-27). Suona in Germania con la New Yorkers’ Jazz Orchestra. Dal 1928 al 1929 lavora in Europa, principalmente in Germania, in Inghilterra e in Francia, dove si esibisce con Arthur Briggs, Lud Gluskin, Ambrose, Ray Ventura, nonché con i suoi piccoli gruppi. A Londra (1937-38) e a Parigi (1939) registra con il suo nome per la Decca. Ritornato a New York, registra con Benny Carter e Coleman Hawkins (1940). Nel 1941, a Hollywood, partecipa alla ripresa del film Birth Of The Blues con Jack Teagarden e Bing Crosby. In seguito lo si ritrova nell’orchestra di Claude Thornhill (1942-43, 1947-49) e a capo delle proprie orchestre. Considerato un clarinettista chicagoano, Danny Polo incarna il tipo di musicista professionista molto richiesto. Dal suo arrivo in Europa, numerosi jazzisti del Vecchio Mondo si sono ispirati alla sua esecuzione sobria e precisa.
