Discografico, scrittore e produttore francese (Parigi, 18.1.1911 – Chantilly, 16.2.1988). Figlio dei pittori Sonia e Robert Delaunay, si appassiona al jazz, diventa nel 1934 segretario generale dell’Hot Club di Francia, direttore della rivista Jazz Hot, nonché manager del quintetto d’archi dell’HCF (con Django Reinhardt e Stéphane Grappelli).

Nel 1937, fonda l’etichetta Swing per cui incidono musicisti francesi (Alix Combelle, André Ekyan, Pierre Allier, Reinhardt, Philippe Brun ecc.) e statunitensi di passaggio (Coleman Hawkins, Eddie South, Benny Carter, Dicky Wells, Bill Coleman, Rex Stewart). Autore della prima esauriente discografia sul jazz (1939), si arrischia anche alla batteria con lo pseudonimo di H.P. Chadel. Dopo la guerra, quando la sua attività risente beneficamente della moda dello swing, è negli Stati Uniti (19346) quale supervisore in studio di incisione di Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Benny Carter, Jonah Jones, e rilancia il periodico Jazz Hot prima di entrare in società con Léon Cabat alla direzione della casa Vogue.

Dopo aver rotto nel 1947, con Hugues Panassié, un vecchio socio, sul bebop, che fu tra i primi a scoprire in Francia, organizza i concerti parigini della grande orchestra di Dizzy Gillespie (1948) e il festival del jazz di Parigi (1949) con Miles Davis, Charlie Parker e Sidney Bechet, di cui sarà promotore in Europa nel corso di una stupefacente seconda carriera.

Produttore discografico, di trasmissioni radiofoniche, festival e concerti (Salon du jazz, 1954, festival di Cannes, 1958), Charles Delaunay non si è più fermato un attimo. È stato vicepresidente della Federazione Internazionale di Jazz (1969) e prima di morire ha lasciato alla Biblioteca Nazionale di Francia i 40.000 dischi della sua collezione. A lui è dedicata una composizione di John Lewis, Delaunay’s Dilemma.

In 1934 he became general secretary of the Hot Club of France, director of Jazz Hot Magazine, and manager of the HCF string quintet (with Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli).

In 1937, he founded the Swing label for which French musicians (Alix Combelle, André Ekyan, Pierre Allier, Reinhardt, Philippe Brun, etc.) and American musicians (Coleman Hawkins, Eddie South, Benny Carter, Dicky Wells, Bill Coleman, Rex Stewart). Author of the first comprehensive jazz discography (1939), he also ventured on drums under the pseudonym of H.P. Chadel. After the war, when his business benefited from the swing fashion, he was in the United States (19346) as a supervisor in the recording studio of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Benny Carter, Jonah Jones. And he relaunched the Jazz Hot periodical before joining in partnership with Léon Cabat to manage the Vogue house.

After breaking up in 1947, with Hugues Panassié, an old partner, on bebop, which he was among the first to discover in France, he organizes the Parisian concerts for the great Dizzy Gillespie orchestra (1948). Then the Paris jazz festival (1949) with Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, and Sidney Bechet will promote in Europe during a fantastic second career.

Record producer, producer of radio broadcasts, festivals, and concerts (Salon du jazz, 1954, Cannes festival, 1958), Charles Delaunay never stopped for a moment. He was vice-president of the International Jazz Federation (1969), and before his death, he left the 40,000 records of his collection to the National Library of France. Composition by John Lewis, Delaunay's Dilemma, is dedicated to him.
