Cornettista e direttore d’orchestra statunitense (New Orleans, Louisiana, 6.9.1877 – Jackson, Louisiana, 4.11.1931).

New Orleans, Buddy Bolden fu soprannominato <<The King>>.

American cornet player and conductor (New Orleans, Louisiana, 6.9.1877 - Jackson, Louisiana, 4.11.1931).

For a long time, he was a legendary figure. According to imaginative testimonies such as Bunk Johnson, extravagant activities were attributed to a barber, editor of The Cricket's tabloid magazine. It took the publication of In Search Of Buddy Bolden by Donald M. Marquis to shed light on the life of Charles Bolden: having consulted numerous archives and interviewed many witnesses, marquis drew the portrait of the one he calls << the first man of the jazz >>.

Buddy Bolden began playing the cornet in Charley Galloway's line-up regularly, becoming semi-professional around 1895. At the head of his group, he performs for ten years in the main dance halls of Storyville: Odd Fellows, Masonic Hall, Globe Hall, Funky Butt Hall, etc. Buddy Bolden was nicknamed < < The King>> in great demand to animate the parties, parades, and parades that multiplied at the beginning of the century in New Orleans; Buddy Bolden was nicknamed << The King >>.

There is only one photograph of him, taken in 1905, which shows him with his orchestra: Jimmy Johnson, Willie Cornish, William Warner, Jefferson Mumford, Frank Lewis. Excess of all kinds, but especially alcohol abuse, will undermine Bolden's health. In March 1906, he manifested the first mental disorders. On June 5, 1907, he entered a psychiatric institution, the Insane Asylum of Louisiana in Jackson, and died there without ever having regained his reason.

There is no record of Buddy Bolden nor any element that allows us to judge him. His music was located between ragtime and early New Orleans jazz. As for the instrumentalist who entered the legend, perhaps he was so powerful, inspired, and sovereign that nostalgic witnesses gave him great propaganda.
